Refuge

by

Holly England

Your arms

were the safest place in the world

I could have lived in them

forever

Strong,

They protected against the hurling lies

Warm,

They sheltered from the cold reality of the world

Tightly you held me

When I needed more love

Even when you didn’t understand

You quieted my doubts

and caressed my sorrows away

You surrounded me with love

So that I dreamt of only you

Now that you’re gone

I’ve found my strength

I fight away the lies

And shield the cold

I can handle the doubts

And the sorrow is never as bad

As the pain you inflicted

When you tore yourself from my side

But I still miss the comfort

I found in your arms
