DEAD RECKONING

A storm is gathering.
I fix position without reference
to the world beyond my window,
where the Magnolia shed her
waxy petals onto sodden earth;
in the month of your birth.
Hatches battened against
gasping wind; scudding laden clouds
across blackened sky - on a shout
of thunder. And I’m transfixed by
the radiance of your presence;
in the year since your death.
My Bio: My name is Liz and I am a Freelance Tutor and Mentor with a distance learning college in Cambridge, England; tutoring History, English and Creative Writing. I enjoy spending my leisure time writing, reading and I sail. I have recently gained my Day Skipper/Watch Leader certification for sailing.
My Motivation: My best friend was killed in November 2007 in a flying accident and at the same time I was taking my exams to become a sailing skipper, which include dead reckoning. The photograph was taken when sailing out of St Katharine's Dock, London in 2007.
