God In Dreams

by

Evan Hayford

as told by Melanie Leeson,
from New Washington, Pennsylvania

In dreams, God sounds
like your favorite song
played right behind your ear.

God says I shouldn’t say bad words.

 You can hear God
 in the creek behind
 my mom’s garden.

God says summer is our birthday present.

 When babies are born,
 God comes down and
 kisses their cheek.

God says children are her masterpiece.

At night, God leans over
sleeping children and
helps them dream.

God says Daddy doesn’t mean to touch me.

Motivation: This is from a series of poems where I imagined what it would be like if God visited Earth. If you believe humanity was created in her image, she wouldn't be a noble figure, but a jealous, drunken, miserable wretch like the rest of us. Each poem tells of a character's encounter with God.

Bio: EVAN HAYFORD is a 22 year old transplant, teaching 7th grade literacy in the North Bronx. Originally from Ohio, he began writing poetry as a child, studied it loosely at Kent State, and now tries to write a poem a day to unwind from teaching.
