Scar Tissue and a Bitter Serenade
by
Alison Pearce

Put the past to bed
Lay your ghosts to rest
Leave your doubts behind
There's peace for you to find
Put the lid back on the bottle of sleep
The blame was never yours to keep
Find the soul inside the song
Put it back where it belongs
Let the nightmares out of the box you've made
From scar tissue and sorrow's bitter serenade
You've suffered too long, paid a price too high
Time to spread your wings, time to fly
No sense is found even in hindsight
Turn from the dark, ahead is light
I'll be waiting while you're gone
To find yourself, to find your home
The journey starts with a single step
Walking over the guilt you've kept
It was not yours, it never was
I hope you find what you thought you'd lost
Let the nightmares out of the box you've made
From scar tissue and sorrow's bitter serenade
Youve suffered too long, paid a price too high
Time to spread your wings, time to fly
Pieces of the puzzle torn asunder
Rent by the violence of monster thunder
Will fit back together and become whole
Relight the spark and come in from the cold
There's a place in my heart that aches for you
But you need to find what's real, what's true
A place to start over, to begin again
And I'll be waiting to the end
Let the nightmares out of the box you've made
From scar tissue and sorrow's bitter serenade
Youve suffered too long, paid a price too high
Time to spread your wings, time to fly
And if you find that the pain is too great
And feel you can never outrun the heartache
Come home to my arms, it's a safe place to lay
And I will put your ghosts and demons away
BIO: Alison is an Australian writer and poet. She finds inspiration for her work all around, believing that even the most transient of encounters has the potential for deeper insight into the human experience. Her work has appeared in various magazines and ezines, including The Shine Journal.
MOTIVATION: This lyrical piece is written from an observers point of view as a loved one struggles with a painful past. My intent was to convey the helplessness a partner can feel as they watch the person they love struggle with tremendous issues, all the while wishing they could take the pain away. I hope also to have conveyed the pain and confusion that follows a victim of abuse into adulthood.
