THE SHINE JOURNAL

Flash Literature, Poetry, Art and Photography!

My Dear Creatives,

As a writer and as an editor, I take the time to read every single submission. As a writer, I know how much we care about our work and how careful we about where we send our work. That said, when I don't feel something fits for The Shine Journal, it is after several reads and a lot of thinking. I also , as often as possible, send the creative a reason why the work didn't fit Shine.

For the first time since beginning this journal and after hundreds of submissions, I received a negative response to a rejection.  I have edited it because it may get published elsewhere and I want to protect the author's privacy and the story idea. This is from a  person who states s/he has many published stories which I have not read.

I wouldn’t normally reply, but I’m puzzled.  How would you think the last sentence referred either to ________?  Only one _____ is being discussed here, and it’s absurd that _____ would want____.  The focus is on the conflict between the _________.

I can only characterize your reaction to the story as obtuse, so don’t expect more from me.  There are too many other non-paying markets out there.

Now, not only has the writer felt the need to explain a story which s/he feels needed no explantion but goes on to insult my reaction. Understand that I have made the decision myself of explaining a rejected story-but I have not ever insulted the editor. I don't recommend it.

Remember, everyone will not like your work. But someone will and that person will happily publish it I am sure. And if it is rejected, accept the decision and move on. To do so is a mark of maturity and professionalism. Arguing and insulting the editor is never a good idea.

And one more thing: I look for really fine work and whether or not someone has been published at 100 places or  has never been published before is of no consequence. I look at the submissions individually and then make my decisions accordingly.

I look forward to seeing yours soon!

Best,

Pamela Tyree Griffin, Editor

I have received some requests for how I replied to this email... WARNING: This is not the kindler, gentler Pamela to which you have become accustomed. Sometimes honesty carries with it,  a hard delivery of the facts-lol! I don't compromise on what my readers and creatives have come to expect, nor will I tolerate a lack of manners!

You never write back? So you clearly have some experience with people not accepting certain of your works. Unclear why on earth you would break your self imposed rule to write me and then call my interpretation obtuse. Your arrogance is amazing.

If your work was clear, I would have understood it. That said, it is my prerogative to decide what submissions I am able to use. There are indeed many other non paying  and paying markets and I urge you to find a better fit for your work--sour grapes...so not attractive.

As to my response being obtuse, you are entitled to your opinion. I have a word for your opinion but I am too professional to drop to the level it would take to insult yours.

As to expecting more from you? No worries about that. Just to be sure though, future mail from you will be blocked.
