The Path

by

Deborah Richard

The garden path meanders through
the tall moss-draped live oaks,

along poetic walls which halt our step, to stop and read words long-ago carved

by those who knew the secrets of this precious land. On, by fountains and ponds

with birds in flight, by paths of flowers and plants, named for our enlightenment, and on to a shaded

porch to sit and rest in the cool of the day. On, to the fields of green where statuesque bear

and deer stand as if to greet us. On, over children’s stepping stones, through the teepee-type wooden

shelter, on to the playful path, designed with them in mind. On, to dozens of sculptures

lining a gallery, lovingly crafted
by the woman whose dream

lingers on with those of us who follow.

Motivation:A visit to beautiful Brookgreen Gardens in Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, is the motivation for this poem. These gardens have the quiet beauty and peacefulness, along with sculptures and wildlife, that make for a memorable day, and a longing to return time and time again.

Bio: I was born and raised in West Virginia, daughter of a loving mother who was a devoted homemaker and wonderful cook, and of a hard-working father who held down two jobs in the oil fields of WV. I moved to the south as an adult, following my love of the ocean. I enjoy writing about various subjects including everyday relationships and the love of nature. I am a member of South Carolina Writers Workshop. Satisfaction is found in many late nights with pen in hand.
